j The Dorset Cello Classes

Adult Learners' Event

Dates confirmed, Session 1, June 6th and 7th (FULL); Session 2, July 11th and 12th.

Looking forward to 2 joyful weekends of cello-ing at the Dorset Cello Classes, held at Holt Village Hall.

Led by Rebecca Gilliver, founder of the Dorset Cello Classes and the honestly not-scary-at-all principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, these events will be a repeat of last year's successful and fun adult learning experience.

Last year, our main focus was Bach's Brandenburg no 3, arranged for 10 cellos, which we studied over the 2 day event, with a final performance to a very select audience on the Saturday evening. In March/April, I will pick another big cello chamber ensemble piece for us to study - any suggestions gratefully received. Lessons, exercises, lots of chamber music and sight reading - and of course, cake eating - will take place as usual. If the event is over-subscribed, we will try to find another set of dates to offer.

Usual schedule

Friday evening, 6.30pm

  • Gathering, cello chamber music

Saturday 10am

  • Morning - Group warmup; Masterclasses (open lessons); discussion on how to be a confident performer.
  • Afternoon - Chamber music, possible private lessons.

Location - Holt Village Hall (on the green, just down from the Old Inn next to the church!) here.

How To Apply

Session 1 is now full, however, there are a couple of spaces left for session 2. Please do contact me via the email below if you're interested in the July dates. Include your musical biography, what standard you play to and if there is anything specific you are interested in addressing over the weekend. Standard - anything from a confident grade 4 upwards! Ensembles pieces are adapted to embrace all standards but the course is not suitable for beginners. Places are limited to 8.

The email address for enquiries is info@thedorsetcelloclasses.co.uk or if you prefer, just give me a ring on 07971440850. The cost of the weekend is £125. If you would like to attend but financial constraints make it difficult, please get in touch anyway, as I feel very strongly that music should be accessible to all.
